I graduated as a Bioscience Engineer in Land and Forest Management at Ghent University in 2005. My scientific career started with a PhD (IWT-grant) on forest soil compaction due to mechanized tree harvesting, as multiple questions remained after writing my master thesis, that focussed on the same problemacy. I quantified both biotic and abiotic impacts and experimentally assessed options for ecological restoration of compacted forest soils via large field experiments and meta-analyses. Meanwhile, the coordinating position of the Forest & Nature Lab (ForNaLab) in TreeDivNet and FORBIO triggered my interests in functional biodiversity research. At the moment, I'm studying the understorey vegetation in the framework of FunDivEUROPE. More specific, the impact of species richness in the overstorey on understorey vegetation composition, diversity and productivity is quantified at different spatial scales. Our study sites include both tree diversity experiments (Experimental Platform) as mature forests (Exploratory Platform). In a next step, I would like to unravel the processes underlying these overstorey-understorey relationships.
